Exploring the duality of African American identity.
This piece explores the duality of African American identity. While African Americans are born into their national identity, ethnic identity and origin is something one must learn to embrace. National identity is represented by the rose which is the national flower of the United States. It is attached to the figure’s body which symbolizes the figure’s permanent tie to their national identity. Line and pattern create a topographic map of Africa to represent African American ethnic identity. The lines of the map hold the figure back, indicating that one’s ethnic identity cannot be ignored. The lines create arch fingerprints on the tips of the fingers, relating ethnic origins to one’s DNA and identity.
